A young chess player from Komani is appealing for public support as she prepares for a major national tournament in the Western Cape next month.

Alizwa Langalakehihle Bakubaku, who is currently based in Komani, recently added two achievements to her growing chess journey. She received a Certificate of Recognition from Chris Hani Chess, presented by Luzuko Ndinise, and also secured a bronze medal at the Sportan Bishop Regional Chess Competition held in Jeffrey’s Bay over the weekend.

Despite the recognition, Bakubaku says she remains focused on improving her game and continuing to represent the Eastern Cape proudly on larger platforms.

She is now hoping to compete at the upcoming Open South Africa Chess Competition in the Western Cape, where players from across the country are expected to take part. However, financial difficulties are standing in the way of the trip.

Bakubaku is currently seeking assistance from the public, businesses, sponsors and community members to help cover travel and accommodation costs for the tournament.

Community members who would like to support her journey or request more information can contact her directly via WhatsApp on 067 007 0522.

Her recent achievements have already started drawing attention within local chess circles, with supporters hoping the talented player can continue building her profile on the national stage.

The story also highlights the challenges many young athletes and chess players from smaller towns face when trying to compete at higher levels, often relying on community support to access opportunities outside their provinces.

As preparations for the national tournament continue, Bakubaku says she remains determined to make the most of the opportunity if support can be secured in time.
