Maletswai (Aliwal North), Eastern Cape – The Eastern Cape Division of the High Court has sentenced a 44-year-old man to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his wife, in a case that dates back nearly six years.
Violent incident inside family home
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident took place on 27 August 2020 at the couple’s home in Cathcart Street, Maletswai (Aliwal North).
The accused, Litha Zanozuko Nkalambela (44), was found guilty of murdering his wife, Nthabiseng Nkalambela (38), following a violent assault.
Police confirmed that the victim sustained severe head injuries after being assaulted with a tonfa. Medical evidence presented during the trial showed that she died several hours after the attack.
Lengthy court process
The case moved through the justice system over several years, with multiple court appearances following the accused’s arrest on the same day as the incident.
The matter was later transferred to the Regional Court, where proceedings continued. The accused made at least five appearances as the case progressed.
His initial bail application was opposed by the State. However, he was later granted bail based on new facts.
On 05 December 2025, the court found him guilty of murder. He remained in custody ahead of sentencing.
Sentencing handed down
On 25 March 2026, the Eastern Cape High Court handed down a sentence of 22 years’ direct imprisonment.
The conviction and sentencing form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the justice system to address serious violent crimes, including cases linked to gender-based violence.
Ongoing fight against gender-based violence
While the court outcome brings closure to a lengthy legal process, the case again highlights the broader issue of violence within homes across South Africa.
Authorities continue to urge communities to report incidents of violence and seek help through available support structures.
