The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) has condemned and vowed to investigate a violent incident at Dweba High School, which saw two learners assaulted last week and led to the suspension of classes on Tuesday, 23 March 2026.

According to the department, the two learners were admitted to Sipetu Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the assault and were later discharged. The incident reportedly followed allegations that the learners were selling dagga on school premises during school hours.

In response to these allegations, the learners allegedly mobilised youth within the community, resulting in the setting alight of two school trucks. SAPS were called to the scene, prompting the temporary suspension of classes to prevent further damage to property.

Following the incident, the OR Tambo Inland Education District dispatched a team to the school and convened a multi-stakeholder meeting, which included representatives of the Traditional House, parents, the School Governing Body (SGB), the principal, and staff members.

Police reportedly advised all educators living in the village to temporarily vacate the area due to escalating violence. A follow-up meeting with stakeholders is scheduled for Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

The district has also established a multi-disciplinary team that will visit the school on Wednesday to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disruption, examine the alleged use of corporal punishment, and assess damage to school property. Meanwhile, a formal case of damage to school property has been opened with the local police.
