KOMANI – The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality says it has formally submitted two motions to the Speaker’s office raising concerns about service delivery challenges affecting several smaller towns in the municipality.

According to the DA constituency office, the motions were submitted on Monday, 16 March, and focus on refuse removal services and non-functioning street lighting in towns including Tarkastad, Hofmeyr, Molteno and Sterkstroom.

Refuse Removal Concerns

The first motion calls on the municipality to address what the party describes as ongoing problems with refuse removal in the smaller towns within the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.

The DA says residents in these communities are experiencing inconsistent or inadequate waste collection services, which has raised concerns about sanitation, environmental health and general municipal service delivery.

Through the motion, the party is requesting that the municipality formally acknowledge the problem and take steps to improve refuse removal services in these areas.

Smaller towns in the municipality have often raised complaints about municipal services, with residents frequently saying they feel overlooked compared to larger urban centres.

Street Lighting and Safety

The second motion submitted to the Speaker relates to street lighting in the small towns.

The DA argues that many areas are currently poorly lit at night, which they say creates safety concerns for residents.

According to the party, improving street lighting could help address crime risks and improve community safety.

The motion calls on the municipality to prioritise repairs and maintenance of streetlights, stating that proper lighting could be one of the most cost-effective ways to improve safety in the affected communities.
