Mlungisi Community Shaken After Man Found Dead, Murder Case Opened
⚠️ Update: SAPS response added
The South African Police Service has confirmed that a case of murder has been opened following the discovery of a man’s body in Mlungisi, correcting earlier preliminary information that suggested the victim had been stabbed.
Police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed that officers responded to a complaint on Friday, 6 February 2026, after receiving information from the Community Service Centre that a person had been found dead in Saleni Street, Mlungisi.
According to Captain Mgolodela, the complainant and a colleague proceeded to the scene and found the deceased lying in the street in front of a residence.
“The deceased was found lying in a supine position and had strangulation marks on his neck, as well as bruises on his elbows,” Mgolodela said.
Police further interviewed a neighbour who lives near the scene. She told officers that during the previous night she heard someone calling out to her neighbour. When she looked through her window, she saw the deceased standing outside the residence.
The witness further stated that on Friday morning, at approximately 06:30, she heard schoolchildren shouting for help. When she went outside, she saw the same person lying in front of the residence.
All relevant role players were summoned to the scene, and a case of murder has been registered for further investigation.
Mlungisi police are appealing to members of the public to assist with information that may help identify and trace the suspect or suspects involved. Anonymous tip-offs and walk-ins are welcomed.
