QUEEN NONESI AIRPORT DREAM: KOMANI’S BIG TAKE-OFF PLAN RAISES QUESTIONS

KOMANI – Komani could soon have its own regional airport — if ambitious plans in the municipality’s latest Spatial Development Framework (SDF) take flight. The proposal includes expanding the existing 1.1km airstrip into a 3.6km runway, long enough to accommodate larger aircraft and position the town as a transport and logistics hub for the Chris Hani District.

The new facility, tentatively dubbed “Queen Nonesi Airport,” forms part of a bold push to attract investment, tourism, and economic growth to the region. It’s a move officials say could unlock new opportunities in freight, travel, and emergency services — while putting Komani on the national map.

A Big Vision for Komani’s Future

The SDF presentation describes the project as a “future catalyst development”, with plans to relocate nearby roads, adjust survey erven, and link the site to major routes such as the N6, R67, and R392. Municipal planners envision the upgraded airstrip becoming a gateway that boosts trade and tourism while improving overall mobility in and out of Komani.

The project also aligns with the 2027–2032 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and could be supported through the Integrated Urban Development Grant once it passes through public participation and environmental approvals.

A Symbol of Growth — But Big Questions Remain

It’s clear the proposal carries huge potential. A functioning regional airport could create jobs, attract logistics and tourism investment, and help Komani become the economic heart of the Chris Hani District.

But, we can’t help but ask the question many locals are thinking:

It’s good to dream big — but how will this get done?

Funding, implementation timelines, and maintenance have not yet been detailed, leaving residents eager but cautious. Like many infrastructure dreams before, it risks becoming just another plan on paper unless clear steps follow.

Still, the idea of the Queen Nonesi Airport captures something powerful — a vision of Komani’s future where ambition meets action. The next few years will show whether this project truly takes off or remains grounded by challenges.
