Severe Veld Fire Warning Issued for Parts of Chris Hani

The South African Weather Service has issued a veld fire warning for Saturday, 4 October 2025, with conditions expected to be extremely dangerous across parts of the Eastern Cape.

The Fire Danger Index (FDI) is forecast to exceed 75, placing large sections of the province at a very high to extreme risk of runaway fires. The warning will be in effect from 10:00 AM until 10:59 PM (22:59).

Why the Warning Has Been Issued

Dry, hot, and windy weather is expected throughout the day, creating ideal conditions for veld fires to ignite and spread uncontrollably. According to forecasters, any fires that start under these conditions may develop and spread rapidly, making them extremely difficult to contain.

The warning applies mainly to municipalities in the Sarah Baartman District and the western parts of the Chris Hani and Walter Sisulu Districts, including:

• Dr Beyers Naudé (Baviaans, Graaff-Reinet, Jansenville)

• Emalahleni

• Enoch Mgijima (Molteno, Tarkastad)

• Inxuba Yethemba

• Kouga

• Walter Sisulu (Jamestown)
