Komani – In a landmark ruling at the Cacadu High Court, five unregistered community patrollers from Ezibeleni have been handed 31-year prison sentences each, with 20 years to be served directly, for their involvement in the kidnapping, assault, and murder of two residents in June 2022.

The convicted men — Nkosana Sandlana (41), Sivuyile Mlondolozi (39), Dumisani Kubayi (30), Luyanda Toto (39) and Thanduxolo September (41) — were found guilty of taking the law into their own hands under the guise of community patrolling.

The Crime That Shocked Ezibeleni

According to the official statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner: Eastern Cape, the incident took place when the group stormed into the shack of 26-year-old Emihle Mrubata, accusing her of stealing a cellphone belonging to her employer.

When their search yielded nothing, the group assaulted and kidnapped Mrubata and her friend, 29-year-old Luzuko Mzinjana. The pair were taken to an open field, where they were brutally beaten.

Mzinjana later succumbed to his injuries at Nomzamo Clinic in Ezibeleni, while Mrubata survived the ordeal.

From Arrest to Conviction

Following a police investigation, the five suspects were arrested and later released on bail pending trial. The case was subsequently transferred to the Cacadu High Court, where the men were convicted in May 2025.

Police Commend the Sentence

Major General Rudolph Adolph, the District Commissioner for Chris Hani District, welcomed the ruling, stating that it sends a strong message against vigilantism.

“This sentence sends a stern warning to those who think that taking the law into their own hands is a solution in the fight against crime,” said Major General Adolph.

The Eastern Cape police reiterated that no individual or group has the authority to act outside the law, regardless of intentions.

Background on Vigilantism in the Eastern Cape

Cases of vigilante violence remain a major concern across several Eastern Cape communities, including Ezibeleni, Komani, and Cofimvaba, where some residents form informal patrol groups without registration or police oversight.

Authorities continue to urge communities to work with official structures such as Community Policing Forums (CPFs) and report crime through legitimate channels rather than resorting to unlawful violence.
