Komani child rape accused appears in court, bail set for May 4

KOMANI – An accused facing charges of child rape appeared before the Komani Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was postponed to 04 May for a formal bail application.

The South African Police Service confirmed the court appearance, with the case now moving toward the bail stage.

The accused is expected to formally apply for bail when the matter returns to court next month. Police have not released further details about the case at this stage.

Small group gathers outside court

A small group of people gathered outside the court during the proceedings. The situation remained calm, with no reported disruptions.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela provided the following response:

The FCS standby duty officer went to check whether there was a protest in court but there was none,.

The suspect appeared before court and was remanded to 04/05.

Yes there were fears of protests since the community wanted the suspect to be denied bail as they allegedly severely assaulted him before his arrest an indication of displeasure of the conduct though not allowed by the Law

He is to appear on 04/05 for formal bail application .

No other arrest has been effected for mob justice.”

Police confirmed that investigations into the case are ongoing, and that the matter will proceed through the courts.
