Suspects in Cacadu (Lady Frere) shopkeeper murder to apply for bail

Two men accused of killing a foreign national shop owner in the Eastern Cape are expected to apply for bail in the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court today (22 April 2026), following their earlier arrest in connection with the incident.

Body discovered inside spaza shop

According to a media statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner, the case relates to the killing of a businessman of Ethiopian nationality at Greyspan Village in the Ndonga Administrative Area.

Police allege the incident took place between the evening of 8 April and the early hours of 9 April.

The crime was discovered on the morning of 9 April when a customer arrived at the shop. Authorities say the customer noticed that the burglar-proof gate and steel door were slightly open.

After receiving no response when calling out, the customer reportedly pushed the door open and found the shop owner lying motionless inside. Police were immediately alerted.

Police investigation and arrests

On arrival at the scene, police found the deceased lying face down with his upper body in a pool of blood. He had sustained multiple stab wounds to the back and stomach.

An investigation was launched, and with assistance from community members, two suspects were later apprehended.

The accused were allegedly found in possession of items believed to have been stolen from the shop.

The pair made their first court appearance on 17 April, where the matter was postponed to allow for a formal bail application.

Bail application set for today

The accused are expected to formally apply for bail in the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court on 22 April.

Police have not disclosed further details regarding the motive for the killing at this stage, and investigations remain ongoing.

District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph said, “The District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph wishes that the Investigating Officer leaves no stone unturned in the case to ensure that justice is served for the aggrieved family for the brutal killing of their loved one.”
