Cala Youth Leader Wins Two National Awards in Gauteng
A young man from Cala in the Eastern Cape is gaining national recognition after being honoured for his work uplifting young people in his community.
Melikhaya Boya, known locally as “Mzala” from Ndondo Square, received two awards at a national Youth Life South Africa event held at the Garden Hotel in Randburg, Gauteng, on 26 March 2026.
His recognition highlights the growing impact of grassroots youth development efforts coming from smaller towns in the province.
Recognised for Leading and Inspiring Youth
Boya was awarded the Best Host Award for the Youth Life Programme (2025–2026), recognising his role in coordinating and guiding young participants in the programme.
He also received a Special National Award, which acknowledges his unique approach to motivating young people and encouraging them to develop their skills.
According to Boya, his focus has been on keeping young people engaged, disciplined, and committed to building a better future.
Part of a National Youth Programme
Youth Life South Africa is a non-profit organisation that focuses on empowering young people through skills development, IT services, and career guidance. The programme often works alongside organisations such as the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).
The initiative currently involves around 200 young participants, who receive a stipend while taking part in structured development activities.
Boya is involved through his organisation, Sakhisizwe Cultural Organisation, which partners with Youth Life SA to support young people in Cala.
Driving Change at Community Level
In Cala, Boya’s work centres on creating opportunities for young people to grow and stay focused.
His efforts include:
- Encouraging skills development among youth
- Promoting discipline and structured participation
- Supporting local youth programmes and initiatives
- Helping young people stay engaged in positive activities
His leadership style and hands-on approach were key factors in earning the national recognition.
Local Efforts Reach National Stage
The awards mark an important moment not only for Boya, but also for the Cala community, showing that local initiatives can have national impact.
Youth development remains a major challenge across many parts of the Eastern Cape, particularly in smaller towns where opportunities are limited. Programmes like Youth Life SA aim to bridge that gap by creating structured opportunities for young people.
Boya’s recognition reflects how community-based leadership can play a role in addressing these challenges.
Inspiring the Next Generation
For many young people in Cala and surrounding areas, Boya’s achievement serves as an example of what can be achieved through community involvement and consistent effort.
His work continues to focus on helping young people realise their potential and stay on a positive path.
