Driver hospitalised with serious injuries following crash between Balfour and Seymour

Two people have died and another person has been seriously injured following a motor vehicle accident on the R67 between Balfour and Seymour in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash occurred earlier on Monday, 16 March 2026, when a tractor towing a trailer overturned on the regional road.

Tractor reportedly lost control

Preliminary information indicates that the tractor was travelling from Balfour towards Seymour when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle. The tractor then overturned, resulting in a tragic crash that claimed two lives.

The two deceased victims were adult male passengers aged approximately 30 and 34 years.

Emergency responders attended the scene following the incident.

Driver seriously injured

The 30-year-old driver of the tractor sustained serious injuries during the crash. He was transported to KwaMaqoma Provincial Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the cause of the accident. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are expected to continue.

Department sends condolences

In a statement, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

Following the crash, the department urged motorists and agricultural vehicle operators to exercise caution when travelling on public roads.
