Tragedy in Cofimvaba: 12-Year-Old Fatally Struck by Lightning
Cofimvaba, Qamata – A tragedy has struck Qamata in Cofimvaba, leaving the community in shock. Twelve-year-old Alizwa Sotondoshe, a Grade 7 learner at Gando Full Service School, was fatally struck by lightning while sitting with her mother during a sudden storm.
Eyewitnesses describe the storm as powerful and unpredictable. Residents reported that the lightning struck suddenly, hitting Alizwa while she sat respectfully beside her mother.
“The storm came quickly. One moment she was sitting quietly, the next, it had already happened,” said a neighbour who witnessed the aftermath.
The lightning strike killed the young girl instantly, leaving her mother and family devastated.
Community members rushed to help immediately. Some assisted in moving her to a vehicle to take her to a traditional healer, known locally as a “unyanga”, but Alizwa was already deceased.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and traumatic, with neighbours and family struggling to process the sudden loss. One community member explained how they ran through the dark storm, trying to reach the family and offer support.
Alizwa was remembered by her classmates as a kind and bright learner. Teachers and peers expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as well-behaved and loved in the school. “She was full of life. Her classmates are heartbroken; they remember her smiling and helping others,” said a teacher at Gando FSS.
Lightning is extremely dangerous and can strike without warning. Experts warn that staying in open areas, under trees, or near water during storms can be fatal.
The South African Weather Service advises that during thunderstorms, people should seek shelter indoors, avoid metal objects, and stay away from electrical appliances. Children are particularly vulnerable if caught outside during sudden storms.
The Cofimvaba community is rallying around the Sotondoshe family. Authorities and neighbours encourage anyone wishing to assist to reach out and support the family during this difficult time. Residents are urged to educate children on storm safety and remain vigilant during severe weather.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and deadly nature of lightning. Alizwa’s death has left a profound mark on the Maya village, as neighbours, friends, and family mourn the loss of a young life full of promise.
