A Celebration of Community Spirit at the Komani Arts Centre

Komani came alive on Saturday, 25 October 2025, as residents gathered at the Komani Arts Centre for the #TakeBackKomani Birthday Sports & Fun Day — a vibrant celebration of unity, sport, and local pride.

The event, hosted by TakeBackKomani in partnership with local figures Onwaba Lizalise Swaartbooi and Sima “Brownie” Swarts, was a heartfelt reminder that community-driven initiatives remain the heartbeat of Komani’s social revival.

Despite light rain and a brief power interruption that prevented scheduled musical performances, the day unfolded successfully, filled with energy, laughter, and participation from every corner of the community.

Sport, Laughter, and Local Talent Shine

The fields at the Arts Centre buzzed with activity as children and youth participated in soccer, touch rugby, and netball matches — friendly games designed to promote fun, teamwork, and inclusion rather than competition.

Creative stalls offered face painting for children, while chess boards drew curious learners eager to test their strategy skills. The symbolic birthday cake-cutting ceremony served as a collective celebration of Komani’s shared growth and renewed community spirit.

The Diamond Modelling Agency added glamour to the day with an energetic showcase that drew loud applause and cheers from the crowd. Their confidence and creativity became one of the event’s most memorable highlights.

Local Talent and Leaders Step Up

Although the rain cut short live stage performances, several local artists including 5_Scott, Expowzza, More Ngalo, BodyBagerSA, and Manando RSA attended and shared the moment with residents, pledging to return for the next event when a full stage can be provided.

The event’s host, Miss Mlungisi 2025 – Simamkele Swartbooi, was praised for her charisma and professionalism throughout the day. Her presence as MC added flair and community pride to the proceedings.

Special appreciation was extended to Vusi Qhim, whose interaction with children added joy and excitement to the event.

Support from Local Leaders and Organisations

TakeBackKomani acknowledged the collective effort that made the day possible. Volunteers, families, and local leaders joined forces to ensure smooth coordination and engagement.

A key moment came when the PR Councillor of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality contributed financial support — a gesture that organisers described as evidence that the revival of the Komani Arts Centre is being recognised and encouraged at municipal level.

In addition, the EFF leadership in the Enoch Mgijima sub-region also made a donation, showing that community upliftment can transcend political boundaries when the focus is on collective good.

A Movement, Not Just an Event

For organisers, the day symbolised much more than celebration. It reaffirmed the community’s resilience and the growing momentum behind #TakeBackKomani, a grassroots movement dedicated to restoring civic pride, unity, and youth engagement through positive action.

Plans are already in motion for the next event — one that promises to be bigger, more inclusive, and focused on giving Komani’s artists and youth a central platform to express their talent.
