Komani – A family in Komani has raised serious concerns following the death of a newborn at Frontier Hospital in late September 2025. According to the family, the mother, who was admitted while in labour, experienced delays in treatment, poor communication from hospital staff, and confusion regarding postnatal care.

The mother was first admitted on 26 September while in early labour, but was discharged the following day after contractions remained minimal. She was re-admitted on 28 September when labour had progressed further. During delivery, the family reports that the baby did not descend as expected, prompting staff to assist with forceps. After birth, the newborn was immediately taken to high care for observation due to concerns about swelling on the head, insufficient oxygen flow, and the possibility of seizures. Despite monitoring and resuscitation efforts, the baby tragically passed away a few hours later.

Reported Challenges During Care

The family reported several challenges during the hospital stay. Updates from doctors and nurses were inconsistent or not provided, leaving the mother uncertain about her care. Blood transfusions and other treatments were reportedly delayed, causing additional distress.

After delivery, the mother experienced a serious tear and continued to receive care in the hospital. The family reported that follow-up care after discharge was poorly coordinated, with minimal instructions or documentation provided for clinic visits. These issues, the family says, intensified the emotional trauma of losing the newborn and added to the physical strain of recovery from labour.

The family emphasised that the lack of communication and guidance left the mother responsible for seeking updates and clarifications about her own treatment and her baby’s condition.

Call for Accountability and Improved Patient Care

A formal complaint has been lodged with Frontier Hospital, detailing the family’s concerns about communication, treatment delays, and follow-up care. Komani News contacted the hospital for comment regarding the complaint. At the time of publication, the hospital had not responded.
