Teen girl found dead after going to meet boyfriend in Libode
Eastern Cape – LIBODE – A 16-year-old schoolgirl from the Ngcongconi area near Libode in the Eastern Cape has been found dead after she reportedly left home on Friday night to meet her boyfriend.
The teenager, identified as Amahle, was a Grade 11 learner at Bulana NdamaSe Senior Secondary School in the Nyandeni Local Municipality.
According to information shared by community members and relatives, Amahle left her home in Ngcongconi on Friday evening to go and meet her boyfriend in Tabase village. Family members said the two had arranged to meet along the way.
It is understood that the pair were communicating using their phone torches to locate each other in the dark. Amahle reportedly told her boyfriend not to worry and that she was on her way.
However, as the boyfriend approached a location near Dipini, he noticed that Amahle’s torchlight had suddenly disappeared. Attempts to call her cellphone reportedly rang but went unanswered.
Concerned, he went to the spot where he last saw the light but was unable to find her.
According to Amahle’s aunt, the family only became aware that she had not returned home after one of her friends mentioned that Amahle had gone to meet her boyfriend that night.
Amahle was known to be a dedicated learner who rarely missed school. When she did not attend school on Monday, relatives became alarmed and reported her missing.
Family members and community members then began searching the surrounding area. During the search, Amahle’s aunt and two of her friends reportedly discovered a shoe near a bridge along the route where she had last been seen.
The search continued into Tuesday night.
Amahle’s body was later discovered in an area on the opposite side of where searchers had initially looked. Authorities were alerted and police and forensic services attended the scene to collect the body.
Community members have raised concerns that police had not yet taken statements from the family at the time of the initial discovery. Residents said they were still waiting for investigators to return to continue the investigation.
The tragic incident has shocked the community, with residents calling for justice and a thorough investigation into what happened to the young learner.
Local community organisations have also called on the public to support the grieving family, who are facing the loss of a young child.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Amahle’s death are expected to continue.
