Popcorn Valley Residents Raise Concerns Over Delayed Road Upgrade and Blocked Driveway Access

Residents in Popcorn Valley say they have been facing ongoing access problems linked to road upgrade work that began on 21 January 2025. Many households in the neighbourhood report that incomplete paving and damaged pavements have restricted their ability to move vehicles in and out of their properties for months.

According to community members, certain parts of the road project remain unfinished, leaving uneven surfaces and gaps where driveways meet the roadway. Some households say they had to carry the cost of temporary repairs themselves just to maintain basic access, while others say they remain unable to afford such work and continue to face daily disruptions.

Residents Say Driveway Access Remains Blocked

Residents report that the most difficult issue has been the inability to safely enter or exit their homes with their vehicles. They say the difference in height between the incomplete paving and their driveways has left several properties inaccessible.

They allege that pavements were removed or altered early in the project and were supposed to be restored as work progressed. Nearly a year later, they say those areas have still not been repaired, despite multiple attempts to raise the problem with the contractor.

Some residents say they initially believed the access problems would be temporary but now feel the delays have become long-term, affecting work schedules, school transport and daily mobility.

Community Reports Difficulty Reaching the Site Manager

According to residents, regular communication with the site manager has been challenging. They claim they were repeatedly told that access issues would be fixed “the following week,” but say these assurances did not result in improvements.

One resident says their last attempt to call the site manager two weeks ago went unanswered. Several community members also say they visited the construction area in person, where they were informed that the outstanding work would be completed once new materials arrived. They argue that this explanation has been ongoing throughout the year without meaningful progress.

Municipality Confirms Issue Referred to Contractor

Komani News contacted the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality to request an official response to the concerns raised. The municipal spokesperson, Lonwabo, asked for the specific location where residents were experiencing difficulties so the matter could be verified. After receiving the details, the municipality confirmed that the issue had been reported to the contractor.

Lonwabo stated that ensuring access for affected households is essential and that the contractor has been instructed to attend to the problem. The municipality also noted that the contractor is still working within Popcorn Valley but did not provide a timeline for when access issues will be resolved.

Nearly a Year Later, Residents Continue to Wait

Residents say that while other parts of Popcorn Valley have seen progress, the areas affecting their homes have remained unchanged for months. They argue that the delayed restoration has gone beyond inconvenience and now affects everyday routines and the wellbeing of those who rely on vehicle access.
