According to the department, the Renault caught fire following the impact. Its driver, believed to have been a teacher at Qumrha Primary School, died at the scene.

Four of the five occupants travelling in the Volkswagen Polo also died. They comprised one man and three women.

The vehicle’s only survivor sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital in KuGompo for treatment.

The N2 remained completely closed to traffic as rescue, recovery and crash-investigation teams continued working at the scene. Motorists were urged to avoid the affected section and use alternative routes where possible.

The collision occurred amid adverse winter weather affecting parts of the Eastern Cape. Wet and slippery roads, poor visibility and possible black ice in high-lying areas have increased the risks faced by motorists.

“The Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes the injured survivor a speedy recovery,” the department said.
