PAROLEE Handed Life Sentence for Brutal Murder of Girlfriend in Cala

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the life sentence handed down by the Cala Magistrates’ Court against Mabhuti Mabra Mbili (35) for the brutal murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend, in a case that has shocked the Eastern Cape and highlighted South Africa’s ongoing crisis of gender-based violence and femicide.

Gruesome Discovery in Tsengiwe Area

The crime dates back to May 2024, when the lifeless body of a young woman was discovered by a shepherd in a mountainous area within the Tsengiwe Administrative Area. The body was found decapitated, with the head severed from the torso. The deceased was later positively identified as the accused’s girlfriend.

The brutality of the killing immediately drew widespread attention and concern from both authorities and the local community.

Breakthrough in Police Investigation

During the police investigation, a photograph showing the deceased in the company of two males began circulating on social media. This crucial lead assisted investigators in narrowing their focus, ultimately leading to the arrest of Mbili.

Following his arrest, Mbili led police officers to the location where the severed head of the deceased was recovered, strengthening the State’s case against him.

State Argues for Life Imprisonment

In aggravation of sentence, State Prosecutor Odwa Mmeli argued that life imprisonment was the only appropriate punishment due to the extreme brutality of the crime. The court was told that the deceased endured an exceptionally violent death.

The prosecution further placed emphasis on Mbili’s criminal history, which includes previous convictions for murder and robbery. At the time of committing this offence, Mbili was out on parole, a factor the State argued demonstrated his violent disposition and disregard for the law.

Mmeli also highlighted that the case ranks among the most shocking incidents of femicide, reflecting the deepening national crisis of violence against women in South Africa.

Court’s Ruling and Community Response

The Cala Magistrates’ Court sentenced Mbili to life imprisonment and additionally declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Members of the Cala community attended court proceedings in large numbers to hear the outcome of the trial, underscoring the community’s demand for justice, accountability, and protection for women.

NPA Welcomes Judgment

Welcoming the sentence, Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Barry Madolo, said the outcome sends a strong and unequivocal message that acts of extreme violence against women will not be tolerated. He commended the prosecution team and investigating officers for their perseverance in securing justice in what he described as a complex and harrowing case.

The NPA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the vigorous prosecution of gender-based violence and femicide, stressing that perpetrators of such heinous crimes will face the full might of the law.
