ANC Mourns the Passing of Veteran Leader Dikeledi Magadzi

The African National Congress (ANC) has expressed deep sadness following the death of veteran leader and former Deputy Minister, Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi, who passed away on the morning of Sunday, 28 December 2025.

In an official statement released by the party’s Department of Communications, the ANC described Magadzi as a “seasoned cadre” and a “committed leader” who dedicated her life to the liberation movement and the democratic state.

A Legacy of Public Service

Magadzi’s political career spanned decades, leaving a significant mark at both provincial and national levels of government. Her extensive contributions to governance include:

• Limpopo Provincial Government: Served as MEC for several key portfolios, including Public Works, Agriculture, Health, and Safety and Security.

• National Assembly: Served as a Member of Parliament and chaired the Portfolio Committee on Transport.

• Executive Leadership: Served the nation as Deputy Minister of Transport and later as Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation.

Roots in the Liberation Movement

Beyond her government roles, Magadzi was a foundational figure in the mass democratic movement. She was actively involved with the Federation of Transvaal Women, the United Democratic Front (UDF), and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU).

She also played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) and served as a member of the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for fifteen years, from 2007 to 2022.

Tributes and Condolences

The ANC extended its heartfelt condolences to the Magadzi family, specifically acknowledging her children and grandchildren.

“She brought a strong sense of public service and revolutionary commitment to every responsibility entrusted to her,” the statement read. “We call on all members and ANC structures to offer the Magadzi family the necessary support and to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult period.”
